Table Mountain
Over the centuries Table Mountain has become one of South Africa's most famous landmarks. The steep cliffs and rocky outcrops of the mountain play home to a number of plants and animals. The best views of Cape Town are seen from the top of Table Mountain. The Cableway takes you to the summit in under 10 minutes and the cable car's rotating floor ensures that all passengers get a 360 degree aerial view of Cape Town.
Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
Situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town's working harbour, set against a backdrop of magnificent sea and mountain views the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront has become South Africa's most visited destination offering exciting shopping and entertainment venues and exquisite restaurants and bars.
Cape Point
Bartholomeu Dias, the Portuguese seafarer, was the first to sail in 1488 around the Cape. On his return voyage - which must have been particularly stormy - Dias stopped at the south-western tip of Africa, and named it Cape of Storms. Visit the Two Oceans Restaurant from which you'll take in sweeping views of False Bay or hop aboard the funicular and you'll be whisked away on a scenic trip to the view site near the old Cape Point lighthouse.
Bloubergstrand
Its name in Afrikans means "blue mountain beach" after Blouberg, a hill not far inland from the coast. It is mainly residential and attracts large numbers of visitors, both from the city, from other parts of South Africa and from overseas. Bloubergstrand, one of the world's premier kite surfing hot spots is known for its white sandy beaches and the location from which the postcard picture view of Table Mountain is seen.
Robben Island
For nearly 400 years, Robben Island, 12 kilometres from Cape Town, was a place of banishment and imprisonment. During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. Robben Island came to symbolise, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity.
West Coast Flower Route
Darling and Yzerfontein are just 75km from Cape Town and attract many flower lovers every year. In spring, more than 1000 species of flowers can be seen - an attraction which is not to be missed by wildflower enthusiasts. Darling hosts its annual wildflower show every year, during the third weekend of September.
Whale Watching
The West Coast of the Western Cape is a rich haven for whales and dolphins. The whale species one can most expect to see in this area are southern right whales, humpbacks and Bryde's whales. The most commonly seen dolphins include Heaviside's, dusky and common dolphins. Whale watching hotspots in the area are St. Helena Bay, Cape Columbine, Saldanha Bay breakwater, and Plankies Baai off South Head.
Bird Watching
Bird Island lies about 100 metres off-shore of Lambert's Bay on the Cape west coast. The island is connected to the mainland via a breakwater. It is an important breeding and roosting site for seabirds, particularly Cape gannets and cormorants. Cape fur seals frequent the rocks on the sea side of the island.
West Coast National Park
Just inland from the secluded harbour of Saldanha Bay one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park. Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine golden beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist and brooding salt marshes are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders from the northern hemisphere.
West Coast Wine Routes
The West Coast has two official wine routes - the Swartland Wine Route and the Olifants River Wine Region. The Swartland is an area rich in vines and one of the bread baskets of South Africa. The Olifants River Valley includes the towns of Clanwilliam, Lamberts Bay, Citrusdal and Vredendal, and comprises one of the largest citrus producing areas in South Africa.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is world-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora it displays and for the magnificence of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. The estate covers 528 hectares and supports a diverse fynbos flora and natural forest. The cultivated garden displays collections of South African plants, particularly those from the winter rainfall region of the country.
Game Reserves
There are several malaria free game reserves within a one to three hour drive from Cape Town offering to experience the African Big Five and a large variety of reintroduced game in their natural habitat.
