Matches Mangaung (Bloemfontein) FIFA 2010

The Overview of games staged in South Africa's city of roses

Bloemfontein is the judicial capital of South Africa, the provincial capital of the Free State and the largest urban centre in the Mangaung Local Municipality.

Bloemfontein is popularly known as "the city of roses", owing to the abundance of these flowers and the annual rose festival held there.

Mangaung Local Municipality – which comprises the areas Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu – covers more than 6 300 km2 and hosts a population of more than 850 000 people (about 23% of the Free State's population). The name Mangaung means “place of the cheetahs”.

“The city of roses”, Mangaung (Bloemfontein) will be hosting the 2010 soccer games at the Free State soccer stadium.

The name of the stadium derives from the province in which it is located, South Africa’s Free State Province.

The 2010 World Cup will not be the first time that the Free State stadium has been used for international events.

In 1996 The CAF African Cup of Nations was held here as well as in 1995 when the IRB Rugby World Cup was won by South Africa. Bloemfontein Celtics also call the stadium their alternate home ground.

The stadium which currently holds 38,000 people is set to have a costly upgrade and will then be able to hold 48,000 supporters.

The Mangaung (Bloemfontein) Free State stadium is set to be complete in August 2008 and the stadium will also be used in 2009 for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
