Cape Town Dragon Boat Festival
13 - 15 February 2009 at the V&A Waterfront
The Cape Town Dragon Boat Festival is held at the popular V&A Waterfront each year . Teams of paddlers compete for the victory in their colourful boats, where the bow has been fashioned into the head of an angry dragon. The sport originated in China over 2400 years ago but was only introduced to South Africa in 1992 when Cape Town’s sister city in Taiwan donated two dragon boats. The sport commemorates the life and death of one of China’s foremost patriots and poets, Qu Yuan, who flung himself into a river after the Emperor refused to take his advice on various reforms.
