CAPE TOWN MINSTREL CARNEVAL
1 January 2011 on the streets of Cape Town
The streets of Cape Town come alive each New Year’s day when tens of thousands of minstrels in brightly coloured costumes and painted faces celebrate the beginning of a new year. The carnival dates back to the days when the slaves of District Six were allowed one day off, the 1st of January and since then their descendants remember them in music, song and dance. Teams make their way to the Green Point Stadium where they compete before crowds of locals.
J&B MET
Kenilworth Racecourse
One of Cape Town's premier horse racing events, the J&B Met is held at the Kenilworth Racecourse each year. Not only one of the richest races in the Cape, valued at over R2 million, but it is also traditionally a day when the spectators dress in the latest fashions. More than 50 000 racing fans are expected at this year’s event and apart from the corporate marquees, guests normally bring in their own picnic baskets to enjoy while they watch the horses gallop by.
